Painted this in the backseat as we crossed Arizona and California to Anaheim. I made it! I will probably have to do simple pages while I'm here at CHA....but oh the fun I'll have!!
365 Days of Digital Journaling: Day 8 (long day coming)
I am swirling with prep for the CHA Winter Show! I'll be there with Ice Resin and wandering the asiles to network and say hi to friends. Just getting the last-minute things done (all while doing laundry and planning outfits in my head) and rushing an order of postcards and business cards.
This page was done in Procreate after working for six hours straight in Final Cut Pro....I've spent a lot of time in and out of it the past few days ironing out kinks, etc. I can be such a perfectionist! This page certainly inspired by my dear friend Dina Wakley! I haven't done much in Procreate, so I'm still trying to figure out how all the brushes, etc look, but my Sensu is soooo awesome when working with the paint!
I'll try to blog my trip! Follow me on Instagram to keep up with the adventure!
365 Days of Digital Journaling: Day 7 (war paint)
I am so proud of my Creative Warriors. A week in, and we're already connecting, sharing, and helping each other. I am thrilled beyond thrilled!
This is just one of those images I got in my head, and instead of letting it sit in there, I got it out. I would love to do a larger painting of her....for now, put on your war paint!
Here's my first week in paper form -- I printed these directly from my Photos on my iPad onto some thicker cardstock....and they printed AWESOMELY. So if there's one you just love, I'll be able to list prints as the year goes on. Contact me if you're interested!
365 Days of Digital Journaling: Day 6 (wake up!)
While I would have liked to work on this until it was perfect, I have to remember that these are to AVOID perfection, or maybe circumnavigate it? Find a nice island somewhere nearby where I could still see it, but be a little more relaxed?
Her arm still bugs me. Which is why I have to blog this anyway -- a true path, rather than one where all the mistakes and raw areas are edited out.
I wish I could wake up in the morning and not still feel tired! My epic insomnia is now being treated with medication, but I don't know if it's any better!
364 Days of Digital Journaling: Day 5 (she is blooming)
A quote from season 3 of Downton Abby (I was watching it while creating this page, and loved this line....and it's not spoilerish for non-Internet-savvy Americans!) that I just loved and felt went with this page. I was a bit more adventurous, doodling and expanding and practicing, and went for idea rather than technical realism....which was a bit more fun!!
365 Days of Digital Journaling: Day 4
My poor FMS/arthritis doesn't like the chilly winter weather. I know I don't have much to complain about - no snow or freezing temperatures! - but I can't seem to get warm.
Wanted to experiment with working over a dark color. Look how the paint looks, the pencil, the pens! All different! The perspective was off, so she got an eye patch -- how fun! There's so much more to drawing than doing the literal truth. I need new eyeglasses, so I haven't been wearing mine as much, and feel like I can't see (I'm nearsighted, but not TOO badly!)!
I've gotten a few requests to show my stylus. I have a Pogo Sketch Pro. I realized last night that I'd torn the rubber over the tip, though, so I'm going to invest in a Sensu brush stylus. Oh, I'm so excited! I'll be out all night, but luckily, have iPad, will travel!
(And see, I still work with traditional materials - below is a painting-in-progress!)
365 Days of Digital Journaling: Day 3
I honestly cannot believe I drew this! And on an iPad, no less! I've never tried to draw expressions, or done an open mouth before! My sketching methods on the iPad are a bit different than in real life, so to speak, and I'm becoming more comfortable playing around and creating portraits/faces. Eeee!
When I posted a progress shot of this one on Instagram, I got a few questions that I'll answer here.
What program are you using?
I'm using Paper, by FiftyThree, on an iPad. I have a Pogo Sketch Pro stylus (but am considering running off and grabbing one of those fancy brush styluses!).
What about non-digital art? Why are you focusing on this? What does this mean for your paint and ink?
I still do a LOT of work off the iPad. See, I started playing in Paper, inspired by my sister-friend Carissa, and was hooked. While the colors and media layer almost like non-digital, it is a different process, and for me, when it's later in the evening and I'm tired and just want to pop in a DVD and snuggle with puppies on my couch, much more accessible than pulling out a bunch of supplies. Plus, it's a new media for me, and one I want to explore and play with. I'm much more comfortable playing with color, mixing, and shading, and feel that the fact that I can't erase as I can off the iPad means it's looser, imperfect, and just plain fun.
Don't forget to leave your questions in the comments! I'll see ya tomorrow with a new one!
365 Days of Digital Journaling
Ever since getting my iPad a couple months ago, I've been playing around with digital art. There is certainly a learning curve, even with a nice stylus (but with enough practice, you can create wonderful art with a cheap one from Target!), and I've hit the point where I'm just in love with drawing on my iPad!
Why 365 of Digital Journaling? Because, despite an undo button and eraser, you really can't erase -- you have to keep going even if you feel you've made a mistake. I can spend hours on a graphite portrait or painting a girl's face in my journal, and while those hours blend together and fade away, it means I'm making less. And how better to improve my skills than with a daily project?
This isn't anything new -- so many have done 365 projects, and I'm not the only one creating journal pages on the iPad or computer (I released, through Paperbag Studios, digital elements a couple years ago!). But I find it to be easy to pull out my iPad when curled up on the couch, or visiting a friend, or waiting for my car to be fixed -- all those situations when you really can't use watercolors or a large collection of pens and other media. I've wanted to do something like this for awhile, and my journals are full of drawings and doodles, but the deceptive simplicity of iPad art (specifically Paper53, which I'll be using for these pages) may facilitate more practice!
Ambitious, yes, but I have a friend who's going to keep me on-target. This is all part of my aim for 2013 to post more regularly to my blog, as I kinda slacked off in 2012. You may get two posts a day from me, even!
Okay, I'm going to let go of my need to write a perfect blog post (which usually keeps me from posting!) and publish. So here's to my year of expanding my skills by trying a new medium and painting digitally!
PS. I didn't post yesterday, so the above girl is from the first, and the following is from today!
